Leading from start to finish, Scottie Smith of Manchester won his
fifth Wagers Auto Parts Chevette Racing Series feature of the 2008
season in the final event at Corbin Speedway on Saturday evening,
October 4, while Anthony Wagers took the series championship.
Scottie Smith set fast time with a lap of 15.575 seconds, and took
the lead at the drop of the green flag while all of the action took
place behind him.
A caution flag came out at six laps, when there was contact between
Doyle Yeager of Barbourville and Eric Partin of Williamsburg on the
backstretch, resulting in both ending up in the infield and being
sent to the rear of the lineup for the restart.
Brandon Smith of Barbourville got past Zach Karr of Keavy for second
place after ten laps, but was unable to gain on Scottie Smith, who
had a lead of a quarter lap after 12 trips around.
Coming out of the fourth turn on the final lap, Karr made contact
with the rear of Brandon Smith’s car, sending Smith into the
infield.
Under track policy, Brandon Smith was awarded second place, and Karr
was placed as the last car on the lead lap.
Scottie Smith’s win came in his Strader Motorsports
Photography/Grubb Performance Machine No. 2, with Brandon driving
the Jerry Smith’s Used Cars No. 25.
Mark Lester of Corbin took third place in the Cliff’s Graphics No.
79, with Bent Couch of Manchester fourth in the Basil Roberts
Excavating No. 21.
Fifth went to Doug Miracle of London, driving the Miracle Mowing
Service/Poor Boy Phone Cards No. 57, and Karr was sixth in the
Stidham Cabinet/Wyatt Equipment Repair No. 6.
Jared Hibbard finished seventh, driving the Hibbard Fence Company
No. 1, while Wagers was eighth based on laps completed in his Wagers
Auto Parts/Kentucky Auto Exchange No. 17 after suffering a rear end
failure midway through the race.
Also scored on the basis of laps completed were Yeager with the
Parts & Paint No. 8, and Partin driving the Paul Harvey Racing,
Siler Farms No. 75.
Wagers went into the race leading Scottie Smith by ten points in the
standings, and scored enough points by placing eighth to earn the
season championship by just two points.
