Parker Racing 1934 Ford No. B5

   Chad Parker of London picked up his first-ever feature victory in the Strader Motorsports Photography Vintage Series at Corbin Speedway on Saturday evening, October 4, and Brian Voiles of Knoxville, Tenn. emerged as the season champion in a point battle which ended in a numerical tie.

   Parker took the lead on the 17^th lap, passing defending series champion David Fields of Richmond on the outside coming off the second turn, and led the rest of the way.

   “That boy has become a good driver,” Fields said later.  “When he got outside of me, I just said, ‘You go ahead and win this thing, I’ll be satisfied with second’.”

   Parker had started last in the seven-car field by his own choice, and immediately began using the outside as he worked his way up in the order.

   “I worked the outside because that’s where the car is best,” the winner commented.  “It worked really good, and I have to thank my dad (multi-time Corbin Speedway champion Benny Parker), and my buddy Travis (Travillian) for helping me with the car.”

   Fields had taken the lead from the outside of the front row at the drop of the green flag, and Voiles went by Preacher Bowen of Richmond on the outside to take over second place, then two laps later went around Fields to take the lead.

   Bowen and Voiles had started the evening tied in the points, and Bowen posted a 14.983 clocking in time trials, giving him the single point awarded to the fast qualifier.  With the Corbin Speedway points structure, this meant Voiles had to beat him by at least one position in order to tie the standings again.

   On the 15^th lap, Voiles spun into the infield coming off the second turn and had to go to the tail of the field for the restart, setting up an exciting finish.

   He managed to get inside of Bowen on the 16^th lap and take over 4^th place on the next trip around the quarter-mile paved oval.  They finished that way, and the standings ended in a tie.

   The tie-breaker procedure is according to the number of feature wins, then the number of second place finishes, and so on, and Voiles was the winner of the 2008 championship.

   Parker was driving the Parker Racing 1934 Ford No. B5, and Fields finished second in his Hamilton Excavating/Fields Concrete 1936 Chevrolet No. 33.

   T.J. Isaacs of Annville finished third driving the Hamilton Excavating/Cain Trucking 1935 Buick No. 12, with Voiles fourth in his Sonny’s Auto Sales/PPM 1935 Chevrolet No. 3 and Bowen fifth driving the Hamilton Excavating/Conner Racing Engines 1933 Dodge No. 21.

   James Bancroft of London was sixth in his Bubba Built Racecars 1952 Mercury No. F71.

   Jeffrey Farmer of Nicholasville was unable to start the feature after having a fire in his Hamilton Excavating/Fields Concrete 1947 Ford No. 4 during practice.  He escaped injury, but the car was through for the night.
