With the 2008 championship of the Edgewood Homes Late Model Series already wrapped up, Russell Smith of Williamsburg closed the season out right by posting his sixth main event win of the year at Corbin Speedway on Saturday evening, October 4.

Starting on the pole after setting fast time with a 13.323 clocking in qualifications, Smith battled side-by-side with Mike Bargo of Corbin for just about half of the first lap, pulling away in the third and fourth turns.

On the second lap, Robbie Brown of Corbin passed Bargo for second place, and that order remained the same until the final lap.

Smith pulled away to a lead of four car lengths by the midpoint of the race, but shortly after that Brown began to close the gap.

The race’s only caution flag came on the 25^th lap, when a fire started in the engine compartment of the car driven by Jeff Farmer of Lexington, and Farmer pulled into the infield. The fire was extinguished, and Farmer got out safely.

On the restart, Brown made one try to get underneath Smith’s car, but the leader again pulled away.

Coming out of the fourth turn on the final lap, Brown spun into the infield after his car was struck from behind by Bargo.

Officials awarded second place to Brown, and placed Bargo at the end of the lead lap.

Smith’s victory came in his familiar Croley & Storms/Hart’s Cycle Sales Chevrolet No. 5X.

Brown was driving the Bill’s Bath & Lighting Ford No. 99, and Josh Brock of Corbin finished third in the Brock Excavating/Sand Source Chevrolet No. 17X.

Marty Taylor of Keavy was fourth driving the Brenda Popplewell/Masters Race Parts Chevrolet No. 53, and Bargo in the Leah’s Catering Chevrolet No. 22 officially placed fifth.

Farmer and his Farmer Motorsports Chevrolet No. 100 took sixth on the basis of laps completed, with Doonie Sizemore of London seventh driving the Sturgill Racing Chevrolet No. 85 and Donnie Stamper of Lexington eighth in the Stamper Racing Chevrolet No. 7.

Doug Callebs of Hinkle was unable to start the feature in his Smith & Callebs Drywall Ford No. 55 because of mechanical problems.

Season ending awards were presented to the top five in the point standings following the race. Smith accepted the champion’s trophy, with Bargo taking second, Taylor third, Tim Howard of Lexington fourth, and Farmer fifth.
