After a first attempted start set him back a few positions, Steve Brock of Corbin took the lead at the third drop of the green flag and led all the way to win the final feature of 2008 for the combined Bee Creek Recycling Sportsman/Castrol-Interstate Truck Service Supertruck Series at Corbin Speedway on Saturday, October 4.

On that first start, the Brock Excavating/Sand Source Silverado No. 0 slid high in the first and second turns, with a number of competitors getting past before Brock managed to regain control. However, a spin by Jason Strunk in the Bubby’s Bar-B-Q/Birp Recycling F-150 brought out the caution flag before the first lap had been completed and gave him another chance.

Officials checked the track, but determined that the problem was not with the surface, saying it was apparently cold tires.

On the second attempted, 2008 Sportsman champion Clif Partin of Corbin, who clinched the title on September 3, spun coming off the fourth turn and forced another try.

this time Brock got out in front with Jason Callebs on his rear bumper in the Barton Industrial Buildings/Cain Farms Camaro No. 4.

Those two gradually pulled away from the rest of the field, and Callebs was unable to get past Brock.

“That first time was entirely my fault,” Brock said after the race, adding, “All these guys are tough competition. It’s a joy to be out here racing in front of a crowd.”

David Walters of Corbin finished third driving the Dixie Riggin Trailer Sales/Tony Hoffman Entertainment Camaro No. 80, with Ron Patterson of Corbin fourth in the Goforth Racing Monte Carlo No. 31, and Strunk fifth.

Anthony Standifer of Corbin was sixth in his Standifer Racing Camaro No. 18, followed in order by Partin and his McVay’s Video & Tanning/Rick’s Auto Camaro No. 3, and Jeremy Sears of Corbin at the wheel of the Bee Creek Recycling Camaro No. 88.

Brock was the fastest qualifier with a time of 14.375 seconds.

Following the race, season-ending awards were presented, with Partin accepting the Sportsman trophy and Ed Murray of Williamsburg, who also clinched the Supertruck championship on September 13, receiving that award.
